“WAGS” – You may have heard the title before. If you haven’t, I’ll fill you in. It stands for “Wives and Girlfriends” and is most often attached to a professional sports team or a reality television show. One of the most common questions I’m asked when I meet new people and they find out that Patrick played professional football is “Are the other wives really like the television shows?” You don’t even know how much pleasure I get answering that question while simultaneously squashing that rumor! NO! After six years in the league on two different teams, I can honestly say that the majority of NFL Wives and Girlfriends are NOTHING like how they are depicted on the television shows!
Sometimes I wish I could broadcast on TV what the lives of NFL WAGS are REALLY like! I wish I could show the beauty of a shared struggle in the women’s Bible Study, and the the support shown through laid hands on her shoulders while praying through tears. I wish I could showcase the genuine hearts of these women as they help those less fortunate through charity work. I wish I could take everyone with me into some of the Christian conferences we’ve had the privilege to be a part of. I wish you could see the hundreds of men that you cheer for each week from different teams coming together with their other half to praise the name of Jesus! I wish you could have seen one of the most controversial players who has been depicted so negatively by the media, coming to Jesus and being baptized. All of this…it’s the real reality of WAGS!
So who are WAGS if they aren’t who they are shown to be on TV? They are a mix of women from different backgrounds, coming together as a community of support. Support in wins and losses…missed plays and injuries…marriages and births…team cuts and break ups…team changes and moves across the country. Some of my most real and genuine friendships are fellow WAGS…friendships that have withstood all of the above and more!
Now, I want to introduce you to WAGS Redefined, a faith-based website devoted to displaying the REAL WAGS of professional athletes! This site was created after fellow NFL wife, LeShonda Martin, googled “NFL Wives” with the intent to find a website where she could connect with other women across the league. She instead found site after site of opinions of the “Top Hottest NFL Wives”. This was discouraging to her, so she set out to make a change by creating WAGS Redefined.
My sweet friend, Dominique, is a contributing author to the site and asked if she could interview me for the “Featured WAG”. I was so flattered that she found me and my little life worthy of it’s own article! It’s easy to get caught in the grind of daily life as a mom and feel unworthy of a title like this, but sometimes you have to step aside and let God do His work 🙂 Through His prompting in Dominique, I found a new sense of value…my story is worthy of being shared!
With that being said, I want to invite y’all to read a little more about me…my past, that has shaped me into who I am today, my passions, which drive me each day, and some exciting plans for my future that I stepped out and shared!
If you aren’t familiar with the WAGS Redefined website, take a gander around! I absolutely love what the ladies there are doing!
The next time you hear or see the term WAG, I know you’ll know it stands for “Wives and Girlfriends” but I hope you’ll also realize it stands for “Women After God”, “Women About Goals”, “Warm And Generous”, “Wonderfully-Made And Gifted”, “Wise Ambitious Go-Getter”, “Welcoming Accepting & Genuine”…I could go on, but you get the idea…WAGS are so much more than the television depicts them to be…
